Game Review - Mole Control
Mole Control is an amusing, 3-D style game, an interesting reinvention of the classic minesweeper that most players can find pre-installed on their computer. In this game, players are helping Dr. Kraft’s assistant as he attempts to capture exploding moles that have infested the small town of Mole Creek. Driving Dr. Kraft’s crazy looking invention, players can expect to hunt through 35 randomized levels as they quest to rid the town of these menaces, while also attempting to receive the grand prize, the town’s annual mole catching trophy.

Graphics: 10
From the moment players load the game, they will be impressed with the beautiful graphics that are throughout Mole Control. When players typically start any form of computer game, they expect the best graphics to be present during the loading and introductory screens to motivate the player to continue. For me, it was a pleasant surprise to see that the graphics moved from 2-D to 3-D once the game started, leaving the best graphics for game play. Another advantage is that the game supports all the contemporary high-resolution modes. The visuals are smooth and complement the game play, allowing the player some pleasant eye candy as they focus on the puzzle at hand.

Sound: 10
If beautiful graphics were not enough, Remode aims to please when it comes to the well-placed sound effects and music. The music throughout the game is upbeat and amusing; giving the player the feeling Dr. Kraft’s apprentice isn’t the only one who is on an adventure! Players will also be amused by many of the sound effects that are used in the game, such as the sounds made by the moles when they are captured by the professor’s wacky invention.
Game Play: 9
When players are placed in the first level of Mole Control, they are walked through every step of the process of catching these mechanical moles. Through this user-friendly tutorial, players of all ages will be able to play this game, even if they are not particularly computer savvy. To make sure that the player is comfortable with the controls, the game follows up with a test level, where you have to earn your mole catching ‘license’ to proceed. Once you have passed this level, players will find that the controls are easy and manageable with a basic understanding of the mouse, allowing the player to focus on the real task at hand, catching those destructive little moles. At first you want to use a keyboard to drive the mole collecting buggy, but then you understand that if you move too fast you might end up hitting a mole, so mouse controls are actually encouraged.

Like many other puzzle games, this game offers a basic menu to allow players to adjust the actual game settings such as resolution, full screen mode, and sounds settings. What differentiates Mole Control from much of its competition, however, are the two different modes that are available for a different gaming experience. Through the adventure mode, players are walked through the basic storyline of the game, allowing them to learn how to play the game in a relaxed setting where they only have to focus on the puzzle aspect of Mole Control. If players wish for more of a challenge in this setting, they can also chose to disable the grid, making each level a bit more of a challenge. For players with experience, a timed mode is also available to add further challenge to the game.

Fun: 9
If you loved the original minesweeper, this game was meant for you. With the game’s cute storyline, fun game play, and challenging puzzles, players will easily find themselves addicted to Mole Control. Players should expect that once they start this game it will absorb countless hours, so make sure you have no immediate deadlines before starting a level. Many adults will also be happy to know that Mole Control is very user friendly for children, making this a wonderful family game to introduce children to mind puzzles. Sometimes levels might seem too difficult for a minesweeper beginner, but there are some special types of moles to help you get through the challenge (and I won't be spoiling any surprises here).

Overall: 9
Having loved minesweeper since its appearance on my family’s first computer back in 1989, I found Mole Control to be just as enjoyable. Every aspect of the game compliments each other to perfection, producing a game that is challenging, fun, and enjoyable to players’ eyes and ears. Many individuals will find this game to be a wonderful starting puzzle game for individuals of all ages, making it a cost effective purchase for families on a budget. I highly recommend downloading the Mole Control demo and giving this game a try.
