Game Review - Bloobles

The Bloobles” is a 2-D lemming-style game where players assist little blue creatures known as Bloobles in their search for the grandest prize of all, chocolate.  Throughout the  game, players can expect to juggle multiple bloobles as they move through difficult terrain and throw bombs at their arch nemesis, the glogs.  While playing through 100 levels and 4 different worlds, players can expect to find a challenge around every corner in this cute puzzle game.

Graphics: 6.5

If there is one area where the game can be considered a bit disappointing, it is with its simple graphics. Though that’s totally fine for a low budget indie game. Most of Bloobles’ visuals are simple, recycled graphics that are reminiscent of what most players would expect from the original Nintendo system back in the early 1990s.  Very little of the game’s visuals seems to be original, which could easily be disappointing for players who are looking for a puzzle game with more modern graphics.

Sound: 10

What Bloobles is missing in graphics it makes up for in sound quality.   The music for Bloobles is optimistic and upbeat, giving players a positive attitude as they bounce between multiple bloobles who are constantly in danger.  They will also find themselves amused with the interesting sounds these bloobles make as they jump or move through the terrain. I found myself feelings sorry for these poor little creatures when I heard their pathetic cry as they fall to their doom.  The effect of music slowing down or speeding up along with the speed of Bloobles is great too.

Game Play: 7

Players will find themselves a bit confused when they first start this game.  The tutorial for Bloobles is a bit twisting and does not go over some of the necessary features for the game, causing a bit of a learning curve.  Although people familiar with Lemming-style games will be perfectly ok. For the first few levels, players will find the mechanics of the game to be much more of a challenge than the puzzles themselves. Once the controls are mastered, however, players will find this game to have interesting and challenging puzzles. Developers made it possible to use keyboard to switch between different “tools” which comes in pretty handy.

Options: 10

If players are looking for a game with a multitude of options and replay value, they will find themselves pleased with Bloobles.   Along with the basic sound and video options, players are given the option to play the game in either casual or normal mode, to help add some challenge to the game.  As well, players are able to unlock achievements for the game that are in the form of trophies or unlockable mini-games.

Fun: 8.5

Once players are able to get past the game’s harsh learning curve, they will find Bloobles to be both fun and addictive.  Most of the puzzles that are available in the game are fun and challenging for players of all ages, with majority of the challenges being presented as terrain difficulty or a set number of maneuvers for each level.  For levels that seem to have less of a challenge, players will find themselves keeping track of multiple little bloobles who seem to find themselves in new and interesting dilemmas.

Overall:  7.5

Even with the games mediocre graphics and learning curve, many players will find themselves intrigued with the cuteness of Bloobles.  With the game’s many options, players could find themselves playing this game for hours, not just because of the game’s interesting puzzles, but its achievements area.  Players of all ages can be easily enchanted by this game and can find it to be a quick stress relief.  Just don’t be surprised if you find yourself laughing at the poor Bloobles’ misfortunes.
